    A Must Have for Brahms Lovers March 28, By C. Riter (Portland, OR) See All My Reviews " First, let me say that the audio and orchestra performance quality of these recordings stands out in a class of their own. Hence the 10/10 rating. Abbados' readings of these works are in my opinion, some of the sweetest and sensitive that I have ever heard.

    In this concert, Claudio Abbado conducts works that impress with their powerful choral singing, while fascinating due to their unusual form: Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy with Maurizio Pollini as the pianist, followed by Mendelssohn’s Second Symphony, known as the Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise). This recording from is also unusual in that although both pieces are widely known, they are not.

    The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, is a work for piano and orchestra completed by Johannes Brahms in The composer gave the work's public debut in Hanover, the following year. It was his first-performed orchestral work, and (in its third performance) his first orchestral work performed to audience approval.

    Abbado admits: ''There was some soul-searching on my part about the desirability of reversing some of Brahms's quite sensitive editorial decisions: the four bars he cut in the Scherzo of the Great C major for example are not Schubert's strongest''. No, not the strongest, one has to admit, but very striking none the less in their brassiness.
